Family History

Frederick Machin Bates was born in 1892 at Southwell and was the son of John James a family grocer and Louisa Bates née Machin of Church Street, Southwell. His father John James was born in 1863 at Southwell and his mother Louisa Machin born 1863 at Southwell, they were married in 1890 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, Frank Machin b1892, Madeleine b1898 and John Harold b1900 all were born in Southwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at Church Street, Southwell and were shown as John James 48 yrs a family grocer, he is living with his wife Louisa 49 yrs and their children Frederick Machin 19 yrs assisting in his fathers business, Madeleine 13 yrs a scholar and John Harold 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Frederick Machin Bates enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Southwell, he initially served with the service number 26874 in the 6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers .He was serving with the 9th battalion Royal Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 27th March 1918 having no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
