Family History

John was born at Little Munden, Hertfordshire in 1880 the son of Charles and Caroline Head (nee Reed) his father was an agricultural labourer. He again came from a very large family having 11 siblings, George 1862, Arthur 1865, Emma 1868, Alfred 1869, Charles 1870, James 1872, William 1878, John 1880, Clara 1881 and Thomas 1883. He married Clara Caroline Shepherd (born 19th July 1889 in Walkeringham) in 1889 at her local parish church of Walkeringham in 1911. Clara brought a child to the marriage, Edwin Sheppard born 19th January 1905. they had 3 children Gladys Mary b 15t August 1911, Beatrice May born 9th February 1914 and Doris b1916. They lived at West Stockwith. Commencing 19th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private John Head enlisted at East Retford and served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd July 1916 the third day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial on the Somme.
