Family History

Russell Campbell was the son of Annie Wright. He was born in Bingham, birth registered 1895 (J/F/M Bingham), and baptised at Bingham St Mary and All Saints on 21 January 1895.His mother Annie, was the eldest child of William Edward and Mary Ann Wright (née Motson) and Annie's son Russell lived with her parents, probably until he enlisted.William Edward Wright was born in Bingham in about 1842, the son of William Wright, a stockinger, and his wife Ann. He was baptised on 4 September 1842 at Bingham St Mary and All Saints. William had a younger brother, Vincent b. 1845. bap. 6 July 1845. William's wife, Mary Ann Motson, was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire, in about 1849 (d. 1915). They were married on 3 October 1867 at the parish church of St Mary and St Nicholas, Spalding, Lincolnshire. They had nine children one of whom, Lily, died young. All were born in Bingham (births recorded Bingham registration district) and baptised at the parish church of St Mary and All Saints: Annie b. 7 November 1867 bap. 12 July 1868; John Thomas birth registered 1869 (J/F/M) bap. 11 April 1869; Charles Overton birth registered 1875 (J/F/M) bap. 30 May 1975; Rhoda Commins b. 1877 bap. 14 January 1878; George Henry b. 1880 bap. 3 November 1880; Frank Hardy b. 1883 bap. 22 July 1883; Elsie hardy b. 1886 bap. 15 August 1886 and Lily Overton b. 1889 bap. 11 August 1889 d. 1897 age 9 years.The family was recorded on the census of 1871, 1881 and 1891 living on Moor Lane, Bingham; William was working as a shoe maker. However, by 1901 William and Mary were living on Long Acre, Bingham; he was employed as a county court bailiff while she was a dressmaker (at home). Also in the household were their grandson, Russell (6), and three of their eight surviving children, George (20) a student, Frank (17) a grocer and Elsie (14) who was still at school. Russell's mother, Annie Wright (33), was living at Hill Foot, Great Gonerby, Grantham, in 1901 where she was housekeeper to William Hemswell (b. Clifton Nottingham) and his younger brother George who were both brickyard labourers. Annie married William Hemswell in 1907 (J/A/S Grantham) and they were still living at the same address in 1911; George Hemswell was listed on the census as a boarder. William died on 7 August 1912; probate was awarded to his widow Annie. Russell, a railway clerk, was living with his grandparents on Long Acre, Bingham, in 1911 along with two of his aunts, Rhoda (34) a children's nurse, and Elsie a dressmaker. William, who had completed the census, described Russell as his son. Russell's mother returned to Bingham at some point after her husband's death as the CWGC record gives her address as Tealby House, Long Acre, and this was still her address in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. She died in 1964 (J/F/M Bingham) aged 96.

2/7th Bn Sherwood ForestersRussell Campbell was killed in action on 26 September 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A).

Extra Information

Frederick Wright, the son of Russell's great uncle, Vincent Wright, and his mother Annie's cousin, served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (27435 Private) and was killed in action on 18 November 1916. He is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, France, and Bingham St Mary and All Saints memorial. (See record on this Roll of Honour)A memorial service for railwaymen who served in the armed forces and were killed in the war was held at St Paul's cathedral, London, on 19 May 1919 (The National Archives, Kew, RAIL1057/2179).
