William Wragg was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Mrs Florence Wragg, of new buildings, Hoveringham, Nottingham, his mothers maiden name is unknown and his fathers name is also unknown, his mother was born in 1876 in Hucknall. In the 1911 census William and his widowed mother Florence are living at 85 Alfred Street, Nottingham, he is shown as a boarder 14 yrs living with his widowed mother Florence 34 yrs a home worker, and his sister Doris Wragg 3 yrs. They are living with Owen Barnes 29 yrs a bookmakers clerk and his wife and family. Another boarder living at the address is George Moisey 30 yrs a farm labourer (his future step father.
Private William Wragg enlisted on 18th August 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 31 days, he stated he was a butcher and his next of kin was his mother Florrie of the Row, Caythorpe. He enlisted into the Special Reserve Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 16th March 1915 and on 9th May 1915 he was admitted to the 6th General Hospital with a gun shot wound to his arm, he was returned to England on 14th May 1915. Following treatment and recovery he embarked from Devonport on 26th October 1915, he further embarked from Imbros on 29th January 1916 finally disembarking at Alexandria on 3rd February 1916. He returned to the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front on 28th June 1916 and was attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 9th August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
