Family History

Richards full name is Charles Richard he was born in 1888 at Retford, Nottinghamshire. He was the son of Charles a railway inspector and Kate Bowtell, of 21 Nelson Road, Daybrook, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1861 in Shelford, Cambridgeshire and his wife Kate was born in 1861 in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, they were married in 1885 in Retford, they had 5 children , however sadly two died in infancy prior to 1911, their surviving children were :- Charles Richard b1888 Retford, Florence b1889 Stafford and Frank b1891 Netherfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 64 Leslie Road, Nottingham and are shown as Charles 50 yrs a railway inspector, he is living with his wife Kate 50 yrs and their daughter Florence 22 yrs single a shop assistant. Richard has left home by the 1911 Cencus he is shown as a boarder, living at 64 Vaughan Road, Harrow he is single 23 yrs of age and has an occupation of railway clerk. If this latter is the case it explains why he enlisted in London, into the 1/12th (The Rangers) Battalion London Regiment. He marries his wife Gladys Frances Salter at St Mary's church Harrow on 14th December 1915, he is 27 yrs of age and his wife is 25 yrs. His probate record shows him as Charles Richard Bowtell of the Elms 71 Panier Road, Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex who died on 5th May 1915 at Fortmin near Ypres whilst on active service, was administered (with will) on 29th May 1915 and his effects of £266 7 shillings and 4 pence were left to his widow Gladys Frances Bowtell

Military History

He enlisted in London, giving his place of birth as Retford and his place of residence as Harrow on the Hill he served with the 1/12th (The Rangers) Battalion London Regiment. Sergeant Bowtell was Killed in Action aged 29 years, on 5th May 1915 when serving in the Ypres Salient, he has no known grave, His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium
