Family History

Ernest was the son of John Samuel Todd and his wife Sarah Ethel Todd nee Barnes. John Samuel was born in Oughtibridge, Yorkshire West Riding, in 1855 (J/F/M Worley) and Sarah Ethel in Nottingham in about 1857. They were married in 1883 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had four children of whom only three survived: Ernest Frederick b. 29 August 1888, Catherine Lucy b. 16 February 1892 (J/F/M Basford) and John Barnes b. 9 August 1894 (J/A/S Basford). All three children were born in Bulwell. In 1891 John (36) a hosiery manufacturer (own account) and Sarah (34) were living at 50 Gaul Street, Bulwell, with their two-year old son, Ernest Frederick. Also in the home on the night of the census were two visitors, presumably Sarah's relatives: Mary Ellen Barnes (16) and Emily Barnes (14) who were both hosiery machine hands. By 1901 John and Sarah had moved to Highbury Road, Bulwell. They now had three children, Errnest (12), Catherine (9) and John (6). However, by 1911 the family was living at 86 Burford Road, Nottingham. John was now working as an agent ('boiler requisites) and his three children were all in work, Ernest (22) and Lucy (19) both as hosiery machine workers and John (16) as a clerk for the municipal council. There was also a boarder in the household, Gertrude Oliver (28) a post office clerk. The family home was still at 86 Burford Road at the time of Ernest's death in December 1917. John Samuel Todd died in February 1926 (J/F/M Nottingham) and his widow Sarah Ethel in 1937 (J/A/S Nottingham). Of Ernest's siblings: Catherine Lucy was recorded in the 1939 England & Wales Register living in Carlton with her brother John and his wife Doris. She was still working as a hosiery worker (overlocker). However, she married a William E Richardson in 1941 (J/A/S Basford). It is possible that William died in 1953 (b. abt 1891 d. 1953 J/F/M Nottingham aged 62) and Catherine later went to live in Skegness where her brother also went to live after the death of his wife. Catherine died aged 90 on 7 August 1982 (J/A/S Spilsby Lincolnshire); at the time of her death she was living at 10 Alexandra Court, Alexandra Road, Skegness. John Barnes married Doris Edna May Wildgust (b. 12 March 1901) in 1924 (J/A/S Basford). In 1939 they were living in Carlton; John was described as a clerk (local government). His unmarried sister, Catherine Lucy, was living with them. Doris Todd died on 11 October 1959; she and John were then living at 11 Hazel Grove, Mapperley, and John was described on the Probate record as a retired commercial clerk. John died at the age of 84 on 25 February 1979 (J/F/M Spilsby Lincolnshire); he was then living at 9 Alexandra Court, Alexandra Road, Skegness.
