Family History

William Henry Chaplain Pyatt was born in 1883 in Birmingham and was the son of John William Pyatt and Mary Ann Pyatt née Chaplain of 15 Gill Street, Nottingham (the couple had been estranged for some years prior to their son's death) they were married in 1881 in Birmingham and they had two further children both born in Nottingham John Robert Terry b1884 and May Gladys born 1894. William Henry Chaplain Pyatt married his wife Jane Lydia Duff Thomson on 2nd August 1905 at St John the Baptist Church in Nottingham, they went on to have a son Charles William Thomson Pyatt born 4th January 1908 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census he is living at 259 Bentley Road Doncaster, he is shown as being 28 yrs a travelling draper, he is living with his wife Jane Lydia Duff 30 yrs and their son Charles William Thomson 3 yrs. In the same census his mother Mary Ann is 54 yrs of age and although married his father does not appear to live with the family she states she is a milliner she lives with her two children John Terry 27 yrs an auctioneer and May Gladys no occupation listed at 19 Lister Gate, Nottingham. Following his death his wife and son lived at 151 St Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster , she died on 1 November 1924.

Military History

Gunner William Henry Chaplain Pyatt, enlisted in Doncaster on 24th June 1916, he gave his age as 34 yrs and 4 months, he gave his occupation as a draper and his address as 5 Littlemore Terace, Doncaster. He was placed into the reserves and called up on 9th September 1916, on 25th September 1916 was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery and served with the 6th Siege Battery. He landed in France on 19th June 1917 and served until on 20th September 1918 when he was admitted to hospital as 'sick', on 28th September he was brought back to England and transferred to Keighley Hospital on 29th September 1918 with debility. Later transferring to the Military Hospital, Seaforth on 26th November 1918, he was then transferred to the Windy Knowle Military hospital, Blundellands, Liverpool on 9th December 1916 where he died of pneumonia on 13th December 1918. His body was returned to his relatives and he is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.(grave ref 8785 B).

Death notice published 18th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- PYATT. – On December 13th, at Windy Knowe Military Hospital, Blundellands, Liverpool, of pneumonia, Gunner William Henry Chaplain Pyatt, 6th Siege Battery, R.G.A., aged 36, dearly beloved husband of Lydia D.
