William Bavin known as ‘Billie’ was born on 11th April 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Richard an estate agent and Mary Bavin née Radage of 2 Milner Road, Sherwood. Richard was born in 1869 at Swinderby, Lincolnshire, Mary Radage was born in 1869 at Langwith, they were married on 20th December 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 2 Milner Road, Sherwood, Richard 42 yrs is an estate agent he is living with his wife Mary 42 yrs and their children, Albert Richard 17 yrs a bleacher, Charles Reginald 15 yrs, Doris 13 yrs and William 12 yrs of age.
Enlisted as Private TR/5/110585 into 87th Training Reserve Bn, commissioned Second Lieutenant 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (21 March 1918), to 3rd Bn. Attended gas course at Whitbourne 24 June 1918. Joined 1/6th Bn at Verquin 16 July 1918. (Sherwood Foresters Officers Services' Records and Medal Roll). Killed in action near Ascension Spur, Vendelles France, and commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary dated 11 October 1918 :- “SECOND-LIEUT. WILLIAM BAVIN, Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action on September 29th, at the age of 19 years, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bavin, Milner-road, Sherwood. He was educated at High Pavement and the Nottingham High Schools, received his commission after a course of training in the Nottingham University O.T.C., and had been on active service about four months. Mr. Bavin's eldest son, Albert made the supreme sacrifice at Combles on December 24th, 1916, and his only surviving son, Charles of the Lincolnshire Regt., has served in France for over three years, having joined up on the outbreak of war.” Above is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918 His brother Private Albert Richard Bavin, served with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 24th December 1916.
