Family History

Herbert Wharton was born in 1895 he was the son of the late William a colliery banksman and Sarah Wharton née Richards of Park Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse, William was born in 1853 at Chesterfield he died in 1918 aged 64 yrs, Sarah Richards was born in 1863 at Balderton, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have 4 children. Herbert was living with his married sister, Elizabeth Bowley and her family, at 21 Park Row Mansfield Woodhouse in 1911.

Military History

Private Herbert Wharton enlisted on 4th September 1914 at Mansfield. Killed in action, 14th February 1916, aged 21, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.
