James Andrew Ashley was born in 1896 he was the son of Alfred and Mary Ashley née Mycroft of 23 Common Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. Alfred was born in 1869 at Mansfield Woodhouse, Mary Mycroft was born in 1872 at Mansfield, they were married in 1893 at Mansfield, they had three children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Alfred born 1894. In 1911 the family are living at 23 Common Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, Alfred is 42 yrs has no occupation listed, he is living with his wife Mary 38 yrs and their 2 sons Alfred 17 yrs a cotton operative and James Andrew 14 yrs a cotton operative.

Military History

Private James Anthoney Ashley enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the Sherwood Foresters (service no 46719), He was serving with the 9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
