Family History

Luke Slate was born in 1892 and was the eldest son of Albert a lace maker and Maria Ann Slate née Talbot and the brother of Julia Ann, Elizabeth, May, Maria, Florence, Albert E and George Slate. They lived at 18 Edinburgh Street Radford Nottingham. Albert and Maria Ann Talbot were both born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham and went on to have 11 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 18 Edinburgh Street, Radford, Albert 40 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Maria 40 yrs and their eight children.

Military History

Private Luke Slate enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 3rd battalion Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France on 7th May 1915 and was killed in action on 17th May 1917 at Salonika. He is buried in Struma Military Cemetery Grave Reference: VII G 6

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 19 June 1917: 'Slate. Killed in action May 17th, Private Luke Slate, Royal Fusiliers, age 25, eldest son of M and A Slate, 18 Edinburgh Street.' In memoriam published 17th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SLATE. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Luke Slate, killed in action May 17th, 1917.
