Family History

William Spencer (junior) was born in 1885 at Barnstone and was the son of William Spencer (senior) of Barnstone village His father William Spencer (senior) was born in 1865 at Barnstone and was a general labourer at Barnstone Lime Works In the 1911 census the family are living in Barnstone village and are shown as Wiliam Spencer 46 yrs single head of the family he is a general labourer at the lime and cement makers, he is living with his widowed mother Mary 79 yrs and his son William 25 yrs, single and a general labourer at lime and cement works. William Spencer married Mabel Smithson 9born 3rd October 1885) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have two children, Mary born 17th September 1912 and Annie born 12th February 1916 and lived at the Rookery, Barnstone. Following his death his widow Mabel was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 26th February 1917.

Military History

Private William Spencer enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at the Rookery, Barnstone, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Landing in France on 7th March 1915 he was killed in action on 1st August 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos memorial panel 87-89, France.

Give unto him eternal rest, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. - From his broken-hearted wife and children.
