Alfred Wharmby was the son of John Wharmby and Sarah Ann Bather who married in St Helen’s Church, Selston in April 1883. They had three children two of whom were alive in 1911. These were Albert (b.1889) and Alfred (b.1892). The Wharmby family lived at:25 Bastion Street, Radford [C.1891]; 23 Garfield Road, Radford [C.1901 & n.e.p.17.10.1916]. John Wharmby had initially worked as a coal miner [C.1891] but later become an assurance agent [C.1901 & 1911]. He died at Nottingham in 1924, aged 63. His widow, Sarah, died at Nottingham in 1933, aged 72.
He enlisted in Nottingham; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Family headstone in St Peter’s churchyard, inscription: 'Also dear Alfred, son of the above [John Wharmby, 1924], killed in action in France, Oct. 1st 1916, aged 24 years. Until the day break and the shadows flee away.' Surname spelt 'Wharnby' in official documents and on the war memorial. UKSDGW: Pte 8157 Alfred Wharmby.
