Family History

John Edwin Spencer known as 'Jack' was born in 1899 at Barnstone and was the son of Edwin a general labourer in a cement works and Mara Spencer née Parnham of Barnstone village. His father Edwin was born in 1869, he died in and his mother Mara Parnham was born in 1872 both were born in Barnstone, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had 4 children,, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Barnstone were John Edwin b1899, Arthur b1901 and William Leonard b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at Barnstone village and are shown as Edwin Spencer 41 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Mara 39 yrs and their children, John Edwin 12 yrs a scholar, Arthur 10 yrs a scholar and William Leonard 6 yrs of age.

Military History

Rifleman John Edwin Spencer enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps he was killed in action on 21st March 1918. He is buried at St Souplet British Cemetery, France. John Edwin Spencer was originally buried by the Germans in Urvillers German Cemetery but his grave was lost in later fighting along with those of the others buried in the same cemetery and he is now commemorated on Urvillers German Cemetery Memorial in the St Souplet British Cemetery. Jack’s death was officially accepted as having occurred on 21st March 1918.
