He was the son of Thomas and Hannah Severn of 14 Babbington Cottage, Cinderhill, Nottingham, and the brother of John Severn, Lance Corporal, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) 10th Bn, who was killed 1 July1916. His father Thomas died 23 March 1929 aged 85 and his mother Hannah on 18 August 1941 aged 82.
