George Marchant was born in 1892 he was the son of Henry a brickyard labourer and the late Millicent Marchant nee Wildgust of 24 Pleasley Vale, Nottinghamshire. Henry was born in 1860, Millicent Wildgust was born 1866 she died in 1914 aged 48 yrs, both were born at Mansfield Woodhouse, they were married on 9th August 1886 at St Edmund's Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 the family were living at 5 Station Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Henry is 51yrs a brickyard labourer he is living with his wife Millicent 45 yrs and their children including Alexander 24 yrs a domestic gardener and George 19 yrs a mill hand.
Private George Marchant enlisted at Mansfield on 7th September 1914, he served with the 2/5th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he landed in France on 29th July 1915, he was wounded and returned to England on 17th July 1916. He returned to France on 22nd December 1916 and was wounded again gun shot wound to his leg and returned once more to England where he was treated at the Northern Hospital, Lincoln 25th March 1917 to 19th August 1917. Returning to France once more on 6th December 1917 he was killed in action on 6th December 1917 and is buried at Orival Wood Cemetery, Flequieres, France.
Also on Pleasley Vale Memorial. His brother, Alick was killed on 02/04/1917 and their brother, Harry served with Royal Field Artillery and survived.
