Family History

Charles was born at Sturton le Steeple in 1899, the son of Charles Gray a farm worker and Annie Eleanor Clark (nee Thompson),In the 1901 census we find him at the the workhouse in Gainsborough, this may have spurred him on to joining the army as he became a professional soldier, because on the 1911 census we find him serving as a private with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment on a tour of Arabia, Cyprus and Gibralter.

Military History

He enlisted in Lincoln and served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action in France very early in the war on 14th September 1914.He is buried in Vailly British Cemetery, France
