Edward Kirk was born at Islington, in London, Middlesex, in 1896, he was the son of Cornelius William a brewery blacksmith and Eleanor Kirk née Buxton of “The Grange” Gedling Lane, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Cornelius was born in 1865 at Arnold, his mother Eleanor Buxton was born in 1867 at Cropwell Bishop, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, Annie b1889 Arnold Thomas b1892 Arnold, Nellie b1895 Islington, Edward b1896 Islington, Samuel b1903 Croydon, Dorothy b1904 Arnold, Clarice b1907 Arnold and Mabel b1909 Arnold. In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Gedling Grove, Arnold, and are shown as Cornelius 46 yrs a brewery blacksmith he is living with his wife Eleanor 44 yrs and their children Thomas 19 yrs a barman, Nellie 16 yrs a lace mender, Edward 14 yrs a laundry van boy, Sam 8 yrs a scholar, Dorothy 7 yrs a scholar, Clarice 4 yrs of age and Mabel 2 yrs of age.
Private Edward Kirk enlisted on 29th April 1914 into the Territorial Force and attended the company based the Arnot Hill Drill Hall Arnold. He gave his age as 17 years 8 months and stated his was an apprentice joiner and was living at The Grange Gedling Lane, Arnold. On the outbreak of war he was mobilized with his battalion and went with them to France landing on the 25th February 1915, as part of 139 Brigade of the 46th Division. He was killed in action on 15th October 1915 during the action to take the Hohenzollern Redoubt having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial
