Alec Taylor Oldham

Alec was the son of Walter Oldham and his wife Annie Maria nee Taylor. Annie Maria was born in Arnold in 1871, the daughter of Walter and Mary Taylor. In 1891 the twenty year old Annie, a laundress, was living with her widowed mother, also a laundress, and five of her siblings on Calverton Road, Arnold, Nottingham. Annie and Walter Oldham were married in St Mary's parish church, Arnold, on 6 September 1896 (J/A/S Basford). They had at least two children: Alec Taylor b. 1897 (J/F/M Basford) and Muriiel Taylor b. 1898 (J/A/S Basford). Annie Maria died aged 30 in 1901 (J/A/S Basford). However, at the time of the 1901 Census, which was held some months before Annie's death, her two children were living on Calverton Road, Arnold, with their widowed grandmother, Mary Taylor (62), a grocer/shopkeeper, and three of her unmarried children: Fanny (34) a school teacher, Christopher (29) a coal miner hewer and Edith (24) who was described as 'mother's help.' Alec and Muriel were still living with their grandmother at Calverton Road in 1911. Mary Taylor, who completed the census as head of household, had had 12 children of whom only nine were still living. Also in the household on the night of the census were four of her unmarried children: Fanny (44), Christopher (39), Edith Alice (34) who was now working as a blouse maker, and Emily Lewis (29) whose occupation was given as 'home domestic'. Alec's sister Muriel married John W Martin (1893) in 1922 (J/A/S Basford) and in 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register they were living at 5 Charles Street, Arnold. Muriel's occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties' while her husband was a draper's salesman. Muriel died in 1975 (A/M/J Basford).
