Alfred Edwin Sanders

Alfred’s correct surname is believed to be SANDERS,(verified by Soldiers died in the great War and Commonwealth War graves commission ). The family later lived in Birmingham, Thornaby and he enlisted at Stockton-on-Tees, however he resided in Daybrook, Nottinghamshire. He was the son of David a blacksmith at a railway waggon shop and the late Clara Sanders (nee Bick) His father David was born in 1857 at Cropthorne, Worcester his mother Clara Ann Bick was born in 1855 in Worcester, she died in 1894 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 13th June 1878 at St Marys Church Gloucester, they had the following children, Jane Edith b1879 Worcester, William David b1880 Allenton, Charles John b1883 Derby, Thomas b1885 Derby, Alfred Edwin b1890, George b1894 his father David had a daughter Ellen who was born in 1896 in Great Hockham, Norfolk. Following his first wife death his father went on to marry Elizabeth Canning on 23rd April 1899 at St Saviours Church, Saltley, Birmingham, they had further children, Albert Edward b1901 and Elizabeth May b1904 both born Saltley, Birmingham. In the 1911 census Alfred Edwin has left the family home having enlisted into the army, he is shown in barracks with his battalion , 38th Kings Royal Rifle Corps. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 16 Sherbrook Road, Daybrook, they are shown as David 54 yrs a blacksmith at railway waggon shop, he is living with his (second) wife Elizabeth 42 yrs and his children, Ellen 15 yrs a blouse machinist, Albert Edward 9 yrs a scholar and Elizabeth May 6 yrs.
