AKA Gorman. Thomas was born in Dublin, Ireland, and there is a record of the baptism on 13 August 1886 at St Andrew's RC Church, Dublin, of a Thomas Ignatius Gorman (b. 31 July 1886); parents Thomas Gorman and Harriety Bennett of 7 Herbert Street, Dublin. There is also a record on the 1911 Census of a Thomas O'Gorman (24, b. Dublin) living at 27 Pleasley Vale, Mansfield Woodhouse, in the household of James Flinton, a domestic chauffeur. However, Thomas' occupation was given as general labourer. According to a newspaper report of his death in 1914, Thomas was engaged to Miss Annie Marston of 56 Blenheim Terrace, Mansfield. Annie Marston was named as the administrator of Thomas's affairs according to the Army records. Annie married Charles Thomas Ball in 1917 (A/M/J Mansfield) who was killed on 24 November the same year while serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment (see record on this ROH). Annie remarried in 1921 (Tapster).
Military records give his surname as 'Gorman'. Thomas served in the Lincolnshire Regiment and was orderly to Captain Hollins, son of William Hollins, owner of Hollins & Co Mills at Pleasley Vale. Thomas died at No. 8 Field Ambulance. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.
CWGC - Gorman Mansfield Reporter, 20 November 1914: ‘Killed at the Front. Mansfield Postman. News has been received this week of the death of Mr TI O’Gorman in France through wounds. He was a postman in the employ of the Mansfield Post Office at the outbreak of war, having been transferred a short time previous from Cromwell. He was in the Lincolnshire Regiment and acted as orderly to Captain Holins having been employed previously at the Mills. He was described as a smart, gentlemanly man, and the Post Office staff deeply regret his loss.
