John Roworth was born in 1893 he was the son of the late Walter a cottager and Sarah Roworth née Blatherwick and the brother of Thomas and Walter Roworth. Walter was born in 1862 at Bingham he died in 1898 aged 36 yrs, Sarah Ann Blatherwick was born in 1864 at Oxton, they were married in 1889 at Bingham, they had 3 children. In 1911 the family lived at Langar Barnstone Nottinghamshire, Sarah is 47 yrs a widow and is living with her children, John 18 yrs a groom and Walter 16 yrs a farm labourer. .
Pte. John Roworth, enlisted at Nottingham and served with 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
Obituary published 1st January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ROWORTH. – Reported wounded and missing since August 9th, 1917, now officially reported killed. Pioneer John (Jack) Roworth, Sherwood Foresters (late Robin Hoods), of Langar, aged 24. A noble life laid down. – From his sorrowing mother, also brothers Tom and Walter.” Above is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918 The Grantham Journal of Saturday, 10th August 1918 contained the following: In loving memory of Pioneer John (Jack) Roworth (Sherwood Foresters, late Robin Hoods) Of Langar, who was killed in action August 10th (sic), 1917, aged 24 years Sleep on, dear Jack, your duty’s done, For England you did your best; Those who loved you most in life Will miss you most in death.
