Family History

George Henry Smith was born in 1886 at Halloughton near Southwell, Nottinghamshire. He married May Wombwell (born 14th May 1888 at Caunton) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District, May brought two children to the marriage Ivy Wombwell born 1905 and Francis Wombwell born 1907. (pension card) In the 1911 census the family are living at Caunton Lodge Farm, Caunton and are shown as George Smith 25 yrs a horseman on a farm, he is living with his wife May 23 yrs and their children May 2 yrs and Ellen 1 year of age. On the pension card of George Henry Smith 5 children are listed , Ivy and Francis Wombwell and 3 sons John Smith born 1912, Arthur Smith born 1914 and Percy Smith born 1915. (no mention of May or Ellen) His widow was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 6 pence for herself and 5 children to commence on 30th October 1916.

Military History

Private George Henry Smith enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Caunton, he served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 11th April 1916 and is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. Caunton Roll of Honour: “G W Smith, Lincolns (British Expeditionary Force). Killed in action in France on 15th April 1916. R.I.P.”
