Family History

Bertie Reeve was born in 1894 at Barnstone and was the son of the the late John Edward a lime works labourer and Sarah Reeve, née Fewkes of The Row, Barnstone, Nottingham. His father John Edward was born in 1854 at Maidford, Northamptonshire he died in 1918 aged 64 yrs, his mother Sarah Fewkes was born in 1861 at Cropwell Bishop, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly six were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Barnstone were, Emma Jane b1892, Bertie 1893, Alfred b1896, George b1897, Ernest b1900 and Samuel b1902. In the 1911 census Bertie has left the family home and is living at Field Farm at Trowell he is shown as Bertie Reeve 17 yrs a servant a cowman on a farm, he is living with John Henry Haseldine 29 yrs a farmer and his wife and family In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Barnstone village and are shown as John Edward 56 yrs a limeworks labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 50 yrs and their sons Ernest 11 yrs a scholar and Samuel 8 yrs of age a scholar.

Military History

Private Bertie Reeve originally enlisted at Hucknall on 2nd September 1914, he gave his age as 20 yrs and 330 days, he was a labourer, his next of kin was his father John Reeve of Barnstone. He was posted to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and reported to their depot at Pontefract on 3rd September 1914. During his training it was found that he was unfit to serve and discharged on 21st November 1914. He later enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Barnstone, he initially served with the service number 4235 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 27th October 1915 and was killed in action on 15th September 1916 whilst serving with the 5th battalion Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
