Family History

John William Dexter was born in 1898 at Skegby, he was the son of William Dexter a coal miner hewer and Martha Dexter née Husselbury of 27 Staneyford Road, Sutton in Ashfield. William was born in 1872 at Shepshed, Leicestershire, Martha Husslebury was born in 1878 at Dawley, Shropshire they were married on 7th November 1896 at The Mansfield register office, they went on to have 9 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Stoneyford Road, Sutton in Ashfield, William 37 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Martha 32 yrs and their children, John William 13 yrs a shop boy, Bernard 12 yrs, Thomas Edward 9 yrs, Emma 7 yrs, Horace 6 yrs and Victor 2 yrs of age.#

Military History

Private John William Dexter enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 25th April 1915 at 3rd casualty clearing station, Poperinghe and is buried at Poperinghe Military Cemetery.
