William Bradley was the son of Auberon Herbert Bradley and Elizabeth Blore who married at Nottingham in 1894. Their five children were: Annie (b.1895), Frank Leonard (b.1896), William (b.1898), Elsie May (b.1900) and Florence May (b.1903). All were born in Nottingham. The family homes were: 21 Norwood Road, Radford [C1901 & C.1911], 24 Radford Grove Lane Radford [CWGC]. Auberon Bradley, a plumber’s labourer, died in Nottingham aged 73 in 1943. His wife, Elizabeth, appears to have died in Nottingham, aged 84 in 1959.
Bradley served with the Sherwood Foresters, No. 552585 before being posted to 2/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. The battalion was caught up in the German Spring offensive Operation Michael and were holding positions just east of the Vraucourt-St. Leger Road. They were ordered to move forward but the Germans were already attacking and three companies of the battalion were cut off and never heard of again. The remaining company was hit by terrific machine gun fire and casualties were heavy. Bradley was killed in action on that day 21/03/1918 but his body was not recovered. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
