Family History

George Ernest Aylett was born in 1885 at Nottingham, he was the son of George a clothing manufactures agent and Emily Aylett née Minns of "Dengie," Wilford Lane, West Bridgford George was born in 1856 at Tillington, Essex, Emily Minns was born in 1852 at Snettisham, Norfolk, they were married on 25th December 1882 at St Johns Church, Hackney, they went on to have 4 children all of who were born in Nottingham, their 3 other children were, Gertrude Emily b1883, Winifred Mary b1886 and Fred William b1888. In 1911 the family were living at Dengie, Bridgford, Road, West Bridgford, George 54 yrs a clothing manufactures agent is living with his wife Emily 58 yrs and their 3 children, Gertrude 27 yrs, Winifred 24 yrs and Fred 22 yrs, George Ernest was not at the family home on the night of the 1911 census. George Ernest married Clara Constance Maud Prior on 20th May 1915 at St Giles Church, West Bridgford, they were living at 16 Taunton Road, West Bridgford.

Military History

Sergeant George Ernest Aylett, M.M., [1] enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps he was killed in action on 25th September 1918. having no known grave his name is commemorated Vis-en-Artois Memorial.Vis-en-Artois Memorial (panel 9). [1] Published 'London Gazette,' 14th May 1919.

Inscription on family headstone: 'Also of their son, QMC George Ernest Aylett MM, the beloved husband of Connie, who fell in action in France Sept 25th 1918 aged 33 years.' Headstone includes the names of his sister, Gertrude Emily, and their parents. Death notice published 15th October 1918 in the Nottingham Journal and Express :- “AYLETT. – Killed in action in France, October 3rd, [1] Sergeant George Ernest Aylett, K.R.R.C., dearly-beloved husband of Connie Aylett (nee Prior), 64, Bridgford-road, West Bridgford, and eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ernest Aylett, “Dengie,” Wilford Lane, West Bridgford. “Duty nobly done.” [1] All official sources give his date of death as 25th September 1918.
