Family History

William Ashpool was born in 1896 he was the son of Edward a railway signalman and Esther Ashpool née Youles of 3 Great Northern Cottages, Pleasley. They later moved to live at High Street, Mablethorpe. Edward Ashpool was born in 1874 at Stonground, Huntingdon, Esther Youles was born in 1876 at Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1894 at Whittlesey and went on to have 4 children. In 1911 the family lived at 3 Great Northern Cottages, Pleasley, Edward is 37 yrs and a railway signalman, he is living with his wife Esther 35 yrs and their 4 children including William 13 yrs a woollen spinner.

Military History

Private William Ashpool enlisted at Mansfield he initially served with the North Staffordshire Regiment (service no 54104) He was killed in action, 20th September 1917, aged 21, during the attack on Bulgar Wood, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A
