Family History

Charles Fiddies was born in 1891 at Batley, Yorkshire and was the son of Robert a railway signalman and Jane Fiddies née Wilmot of the Banks, Bingham. His father Robert was born in 1856 in Wakefield and his mother Jane Wilmot was born in 1859 in Ashover, Derbyshire, they were married on 27th August 1885 in Ashover Derbyshire and went on to have 4 children, Robert b1887 Scrooby, Oliver b1889 Scrooby, Charles b1891 Batley and Lillian b1893 Batley In 1909 Charles married his wife Louie Smithson (born 1891 Granby) their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield Registration District, they go on to have a daughter Irene b1909 at Tupton, Derbyshire and son Robert b1913in Barnstone In the 1911 census his family are living at The Banks Bingham and are shown as Robert 55 yrs a railway signalman, he is living with his wife Jane 52 yrs and their children Oliver 22 yrs a plumber and Lillian 18 yrs a dress maker . In the same 1911 census we find Charles living at Ivy Cottages, Barnstone, he is shown as Charles 21 yrs a labourer at lime works, he is living with his wife Louie 20 yrs and their daughter Irene 2 yrs.

Military History

Private Charles Fiddies enlisted at Nottingham and served with the Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 15th August 1915 with 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards. He was serving with the 1st battalion when he was killed in action during fighting around the Solesmes Railway Cutting on 13th October 1918. He is buried in Grave D25, Quievy Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
