Family History

Alonzo Burrows was born in 1893 at Mexborough, Yorkshire and was the only son of Samuel a general labourer and Annie Burrows, of Granby, Elton, Nottingham. His father Samuel was born in 1871in Jersey and his mother Annie was born in 1874 at West Hallam, Derbyshire, they were married in c1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ivy Cottage, Barnstone and are shown as Samuel 40 yrs a cement worker, he is living with his wife Annie, 37 yrs and their son Alonzo 18 yrs a cement worker.

Military History

Private Alonzo Burrows, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Barnstone, he served with. "A" Sqdn 9th Lancer. He landed in France on 1st June 1915. He died of wounds on 10th August 1918 and is buried in Villers Bretonneux Military Cemetery.

In memoriam published 12th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BURROWS. – In loving remembrance of Alonzo [illegible] Burrows, 9th Lancers, died of wounds August 10th, 1918.
