Family History

James Henry Hall was born in 1894 at Harby, and was the son of William a miller and Eleanor Hall née Baxter of Harby Mills, Melton Mowbray. His father William was born in 1855 at Harleston, Lincs and his mother Eleanor Baxter was born in 1857 at Market Deeping, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1911 census are George William b1889 Harby, Gertrude Mary b1892 Harby, James Henry b1894 Harby and Thomas b1897 at Harby. James Henry Hall married his wife Ellen Lane on 8th February 1915 at the parish church at Clifton, they went on to have a daughter Rose Ellen Hall born 23rd June 1915 they lived at Edwalton, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private James Henry Hall attested on 24th June 1916, he gave his age as 23 yrs and 1 month, his address as Edwalton, Nottingham, he gave his occupation as a cowman/dairyman his next of kin was his wife Ellen of the same address. He was posted tot he reserves the following day. He was called up on 3rd April 1917 at Ilkeston and he was posted to the General Service cavalry reserve and later to the 5th training reserve battalion. He landed in France on 12th October 1917 and on 14th October 1917 was posted to the 1st battalion The Queen's (Royal West Kent Regiment). he was killed in action on 26th October 1917 and is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery grave reference 8.L.1
