Family History

William Ball was born in 1878 at Nottingham, he married Sarah Riley on 28th May 1898 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, they lived at 10 Daykin Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham. They had the following children all of whom were born in Sneinton, Nottingham. William Albert born 16th January 1899, Leonard born 24th May 1903, James Arthur born 26th September 19105, Lucy born 25th September 1908, Hilda born 20th November 1910 (Hilda died 28th December 1918 of meningitis) Leslie Samuel born 9th September 1912 and Ruth 23rd February 1914. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Victoria Terrace, Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, Nottingham and are shown as William 33 yrs a lacemaker, he is living wit his wife Sarah 33 yrs and their children, William Albert 12 yrs, Leonard 7 yrs James 5 yrs and Hilda 4 months of age. His wife and family were living at Hall Fields, Edwalton at the time of his death, his widow went on to receive a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence in respect of her and her 5 children commencing on 5th May 1919.

Military History

Private William Ball enlisted on 26th May 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 37 yrs and his address as 10 Daykin Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a lace factory hand, his next of kin was his wife Sarah of the same address. He was posted to the 16th battalion (Chatsworth Rifles) Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 20th April 1916 arriving at Etaples the following day. He was posted on 25th May 1918 to the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 14th October 1918. He is buried at Dadizeele New British Cemetery 4.E.4,
