Family History

Joseph Smith was born in1893 at Costock and was the son of John Thomas a farmer and Rebecca Smith née James of Costock. His father John Smith was born in1866 at Costock and his mother Rebecca James was born in 1873 also at Costock, they were married in 1892, their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough Registration District, they wnet on to have the following children all of whom were born in Costock, Joseph b1893, Harry b1896, Thomas b1897, Mabel b1898, Annie b1901, Arthur b1905, Alice b1907 and Hilda b1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at London Road, Costock and are shown as John 45 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Rebecca 38 yrs and their children, Thomas 14 yrs at home, Mabel 13 yrs a scholar, Annie 10 yrs a scholar, Arthur 6 yrs, Alice 4 yrs, and Hilda 3 months of age. Joseph has left home by the time of the 1911 census and he is to be found living at Old Hall Farm, Costock, he is shown as being 18 yrs of age single and a waggoner on a farm, he is living with the widowed Edwin Keyworth 72 yrs a farmer and his children.

Military History

Private Joseph Smith enlisted in November 1914 at Loughborough and served with the 1/5th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 24th September 1918 and is buried at Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery grave reference. 3.G.6
