At St Giles’ Church, Costock, on Sunday, a beautiful memorial window ‘To the glory of God and to the memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914-1919’ was unveiled by the Rural Dean, the Rev R Hargreaves. The service was conducted by the Rev. C Bird Clarke, the rector, and the church was crowded. The names of those who fell in the war are on the window: Seond-Lieut John JT Oldershaw, KOYLI; Corporal Joseph Chevins, S Staff; Private George Chevins, 1st Grenadier Guards; John E Clay, 5th Leicesters; Ernest Newman, 9th Leicesters; Geo W Poulson, N. Staffs; Joseph Smith, 5th Leicesters; Walter Staples, 2nd Leicesters; John R Walker, S. Staffs. The window was designed by Messrs. Burlinson and Grylls and represents our risen Saviour, St Michael and St George. On the top panels are angels with wreaths on which are appropriate texts, ‘The noble army of martyrs praise Thee’, ‘Their name liveth for evermore’, and ‘Their works do follow them.’ The expenses have been paid for by a voluntary fund given willingly by the parishioners; and, further, there will be put up a tablet in the Wesleyan Chapel ‘to the memory of those who gave their lives for us.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
