Family History

Ernest Newman was born in 1881 at Costock, he was the son of William a farm labourer and Mary Newman of Costock village. His father William was born in 1858 and his mother Mary was born in 1856 both were born in Costock, they were married C1879 , they went on to have 9 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 191 the family were living at Costock village, William 53 yrs is a farm labourer, living with his wife Mary 55 yrs and two of their children, Ernest William 30 yrs a farm labourer and Ellen 22 yrs a seamstress.

Military History

Private Ernest Newman enlisted at Loughborough, he served with the 9th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 25th September 1916 having no know grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
