Arthur Varley was born at Arnold in 1897, the son of William a frame work knitter and the late Florrie Varley née Lane. William was born in 1872 at Arnold, Florence Lane was born in 1874 also in Arnold, she died in 1902 aged 29 yrs, married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, William b1896, Arthur Leonard b1897, Florence b1898 and Thomas Peter b1900. Following his mothers death , Arthur and his siblings Florence and Thomas were brought up by their grandparents, Peter and Harriett Varley. In the 1911 Census Arthur Leonard is living with his grandparents Peter and Harriet Varley at 53 West Street, Arnold along two of his siblings. He is shown as 14 yrs of age but already working in the hosiery business. In the same 1911 census he is father William is living at 5 Furlong Street, Arnold , he is shown as 39 yrs a widow and frame work knitter
Private Arthur Leonard Varley enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Arnold, and that his regimental number is a post 1916 number. This does not mean he enlisted in or after 1916 for he could already have been serving when all numbers in the Army were changed to six figure numbers in 1916. We do know that he was serving with the 1/8th battalion and that this battalion had a Company based in the town with its headquarters at Newark. The battalion landed in France in February 1915, he was wounded while in the Loos sector and later died from these wounds on 12th May 1917, he is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France
