John was born at Arnold in 1897, and was the son of Mrs Mary Sulley of 66 West Street, Arnold and the late John Sulley a brewery drayman. His father John was born in 1871 at Arnold, he died in 1911 aged 40 yrs, his mother Mary Hudson was born in 1871 at Arnold they had the following children, John b1897, Lottie b1898, Sarah b1903, Mabel b1905, Annie b1907 and Arthur 2 yrs In the 1911 Census the family are living at 62 West Street, Arnold and are shown as John 40 yrs a brewery drayman, he is living with his wife Mary 41 yrs and their children, John 14 yrs a brewery worker, Lottie 13 yrs a scholar, Sarah 8 yrs , Mabel 6 yrs, Annie 4 yrs and Arthur 2 yrs they state they have been married 18 yrs and have had 7 children, one which died.
Private John Sulley enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and after training was posted to their 1/8th Territorial Battalion. At the outbreak of the war this battalion had its Headquarters in Newark, with company’s based at Southwell, Carlton, Arnold, Mansfield and Worksop. By September, 1917, the battalion were in the line in the Cambrin Sector. They were at Fouquieres on the 13th and they moved into huts at Mazingarbe on the 20th. Between the 21st and the28th of September the battalion were in the Front Line and Support Trenches at Hill 70 near Mazingarge. The battalion war diary shows that on the 26th the period consisted of ordinary trench warfare. The trenches were very little shelled, but at times the left Company experienced some trouble from heavy enemy Trench Mortars. It was in these trenches that John was killed in action being caught by one of the German Heavy Trench Mortar bombs. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France
