Family History

George was born at Arnold in 1892, the son of George and Annie Sharratt. In the 1911 Census he is shown as living at Robinsons Yard, Front Street, Arnold, he is 18 yrs of age, and an iron foundry labourer and he is the foster son of Ellen Bolt who is the head of the family and a widow.

Military History

He enlisted into the Grenadier Guards at Nottingham and after training he was posted to their 1st Battalion.. On the 7th October 1914, they landed at Zeebrugge as a part of the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action during the first battle of Ypres 27th October 1914, his body was never identified and he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres Belgium, Panel 9 and 11.
