Samuel was born in Arnold in 1889 and was the son of Miles a collier and the late Fanny Rockley, née Hudson of Calverton Road, Arnold, His father Miles was born in 1864 at Arnold, his mother Fanny Hudson was born in 1868 in Arnold, she died in 1892 aged 26 yrs they were married on 14th May 1887 at Arnold and had the following children, Elizabeth b1887, Mary b1888, Samuel b1889 and Jane b1890, all were born in Arnold. In the 1911 Census Samuel has left the family home he is shown as a servant , a wagoner on a farm living at Woodhouse Hall, Holbeck, Nottinghamshire he is 22 yrs of age and single. In the same census his father Miles is living at Calverton Road, Arnold he is shown as being 47 yrs of age a widow and collier, he is living with his sister Sarah Ann Dennison 57 yrs a house keeper. His father Miles went on to marry again on 2nd October 1915 at Nottingham to Sarah Radford.
Lance Corporal Samuel Rockley enlisted at Welbeck, a village not far from Holbeck Nottinghamshire into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. In fact he joined the 17th (Welbeck Rangers) Battalion of the regiment which had been formed by the Duke of Newcastle in June 1915 and had landed in France on the 6th March 1916. At some time during the next few months he was transferred to serve with the South Staffordshire Regiment and was posted to their 8th Battalion. This battalion of the Staffordshire Regiment had been in France since the 14th July 1915. He was killed in action during the battle of Arras on 23rd April 1917 his body was never identified and he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France Bay 6.
