Family History

Bernard was born at Arnold in 1898, the son of Thomas and Fanny Raynor. He had at least six siblings: George, Emma, Lucy, Samuel, Harry and Mabel. In the 1911 Census the family is living at 55 Byron Street, Daybrook: Thomas, Fanny and their children Emma, Lucy, Harry, Bernard and Mabel. Both his parents had died by the end of the Great War. The CWGC record gives their address as 55 Byron Street, Daybrook. He was educated at the Daybrook Primary School and then at the British School, Front Street, Arnold. After leaving school he found employment at Gedling Colliery as a miner.

Military History

He enlisted at Nottingham in the Lincolnshire Regiment. It was during the last day of the German offensive (Operation Michael) that Bernard was killed in action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France
