Family History

John Henry Oscroft also known as Henry Sharpe was born at Arnold in 1893 and was the son of Maria Oscroft of Cross Street, Arnold his mother married Albert Shelton of Arnold, Nottingham in 1896. Maria died in 1916 and he then lived with his grandparents Thomas and Alice Sharpe at 7 Hardstaffs Yard, Front Street, Arnold.

Military History

Private John Henry Oscroft enlisted in September 1915 at Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters regiment. After his initial training he was posted to their 10th battalion he was killed in action on 13th August 1918 during machine gunning and shelling at Proyart on 13th August 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artoise memorial, France

In memoriam published 13th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “OSCROFT. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Henry Sharpe, who was killed in action August 13th, 1918, aged 25 years, buried at Merricourt, somewhere in France. Rest in peace. – From his loving brothers, Albert, Joseph, Jake, William, and Thomas Shelton. “OSCROFT. – In loving memory of Pte. John Henry Oscroft, of Arnold (better known as Henry Sharpe), the beloved grandson of Thomas and Alice Sharpe, who was killed in action August 13th, 1918, aged 25 years, buried at Merricourt, France.
