Family History

Roland Marriott was born in 1898 at Arnold he lived at Fern Cottage, Furlong Avenue, Arnold and was the son of William a hosiery hand and Sarah Marriott née Mee. His father William was born in 1861 at Arnold, his mother Sarah Mee was born in 1863 also at Arnold, they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Arnold, Thomas b1882, Henry 1884, Wilfred b1886, Percy b1888 and Roland b1898. In the 1911 Census the family are living at Furlong Street Avenue, Arnold and are shown as William 50 yrs a hosiery hand, he is living with his wife Sarah 48 yrs and their children, Wilfred 25 yrs a wood bender, Percy 23 yrs a wicker worker and Roland 13 yrs of age and is a cotton boy in the lace trade,

Military History

Private Roland Marriott as soon as he was able on his 18th birthday enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Nottingham and after training was posted to the 2nd Battalion, he was killed in action on 27th May 1918 at Villers Bretonneux during heavy shelling. He is buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium
