Family History

George was born in 1894 at Daybrook, the son of Joseph a brewery drayman and Sarah Ann Maddock (nee Glazebrook) of Rydal Cottages, Daybrook. His father Joseph was born in 1864 at Daybrook, his mother Sarah Ann Glazebrook was born in 1866 at Arnold, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Clara b1889, Leonard b1890, George b1894 and Elsie b1896 all were born at Daybrook. In the 1911 Census the family is shown living at Rhydal Cottages, Daybrook and are shown as Joseph 47 yrs a brewery drayman he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 45 yrs and their children, Clara 22 yrs a hosiery overlocker, Leonard 21 yrs an iron foundry labourer, George 17 years of age, single and a wicker worker. and Elsie 15 yrs a shirt hand in a blouse factory. George married Ellen Colledge (born 1895) in 1915 their marriage was registered in the Basford registration district, they lived at 67 Calverton Road, Arnold, they had a son Stanley born 1915. Following his death his widow Ellen was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 10th June 1918.

Military History

Private George Maddock, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, formerly of the Welbeck Rangers, he was killed in hospital during an air raid on 1st December 1917. He is buried in Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery.
