Family History

Ernest Gregg was born in Arnold in 1893, the son of Thomas a brewery night watchman and Hannah Gregg née Horton of 12 St Albans Road, Arnold. His father Thomas was born in 1854 at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, his mother Hannah Horton was born in 1854 at Arnold, they were married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on t have 9 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Henry b1876, Annie b1878, Thomas b1880, Albert b1882, Ethel b1885, Elizabeth b1888 and Ernest b1893 all were born in Arnold. In the 1911 census the family are living at St Albans Road, Arnold and are shown as Thomas 57 yrs a brewery night watchman, he is living with his wife Hannah 57 yrs and their children, Lizzie 22 yrs a machinist blouse maker and Ernest 18 yrs a brewery bottle examiner.

Military History

Rifleman Ernest Gregg enlisted in Hucknall in July 1916, he was serving with his battalion 8th King's Royal Rifles Corps in the area of Roclincourt. The battalion sent out several digging parties with sandbags, picks and shovels, wire etc while two Vickers machine guns were placed to protect the flanks. The parties worked as best they could improving the position and erecting wire, but were continuously under fire from the trench mortars of the enemy. The work went on into the night and during the early hours of the 3rd July three men were killed when working near the lip of the crater which they were turning into a strong point. Ernest was one of these three men killed. He is buried at the Faubourge D'Aiens Cemetery, Arras, France
