Family History

Robert Goss was born in 1894 at Mapperley, Nottingham, he was the son of the late Henry Goss a whip thong maker and his wife Selina Gordon Goss née Starkey of 4 Hardstaff Yard, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1853 at Nottingham, he died in 1907 he was aged 54 yrs, Selina Gordon Starkey was born in 1856 at Nottingham, they were married on 19th May 1879 at St Pauls Church, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his widowed mother Selina 55 a housekeeper is living at 4 Hardstaff Yard, Arnold, she is living with her children, Mary 22 yrs, Robert 16 yrs a collier and James Godon 13 yrs a beer bottle labeller at the local brewery.

Military History

Rifleman Robert Goss enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Arnold, he served with the 9th battalion Rifle Brigade, going out to France with them in the early part of 1915.Robert died in hospital at Boulogne, from his wounds on the 23rd August, 1915 He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France
