George James Fox was born in Arnold in 1899 the son of James a house painter and the late Lilley Fox née Hickling of 19 Cavendish Street, Arnold. His father James was born in 1860 at Arnold, his mother Lilly Hickling was born in 1870 at Arnold, she died in 1902 at Arnold aged 31 yrs, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, George b1899, Albert William b1901 and Lilly born 1902. In the 1911 Census the family are living at 19 Cavendish Street, Arnold but by this time his mother Lilley has died, the family are shown as James Fox 51 yrs a widow he is living with his wchildren, George 12 yrs a scholar, Albert William 10 yrs a scholar and Lilly 9 yrs of age. George attended the Arnold British School. After leaving school he worked for his father as a painter and decorator..
As soon as George was 18 yrs of age he enlisted at Hucknall. He was initially enlisted into the 8th Training Reserve battalion with number 82819, but at some stage was posted into the 5th Battalion The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with the new regimental number of 62525. At 9pm on the night of the 19th July, 1918, the battalion was ordered to move in battle order to preliminary assembly positions prior to carrying out an attack on the 20th on the Bois-De-Reims and Chateau-De-Commetreuil. This battle was part of what was to become known at the Second Battle of the Marne which involved mainly the French and the Americans. It was during the attack put in by the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in the area of Bois-De-Reims on the morning of the 20th July, that George was killed in action
He was buried at the Jonchery-Sur-Cesle British Cemetery, France
