Family History

James was born in 1894 the son of James and the late Harriett Churm née Guest, of 111, Croft Road, Stockingford, Warwickshire. James was born in 1874 at Bilston, Harriet Guest was born in 1869 at Wellington, Shropshire, she died in 1909 aged 40 yrs, married on 5th March 1893 in Staffordshire they went on to have 9 children, There is an entry in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 29th July 1915 which shows he lived at 33 James Street, Arnold, Nottingham and was aged 21 years at the time of his death.

Military History

He attested at Arnold on 30th April 1914 ,he gave his age as 20 yrs and stated he was a miner and lived at 33 James Street, Arnold. He was on home service from 6th August 1914 until 1st March 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st November 1914. He landed in France on the 1st March 1915 but lost his stripe on 24th March 1915 but was re instated to the rank of Lance Corporal on 9th June 1915. On 26th June his battalion were at Sanctuary Wood, the enemy artillery heavily shelled trenches 7 and 8 on and off all day and in the afternoon they turned their attention to Sanctuary Wood sending their shells over. During the shelling of trenches 7 and 8 three men were killed, Lance Corporal James Churm was one of these. He is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium
