Bertie was born in 1889 the son of William a chimney sweep and Ellen Campion (née Scott) of 110 Spout Lane Arnold Nottingham. His father was born in 1844 at Arnold, his mother in 1856 at Debenham Suffolk. Married in 1880 at Wandsworth, they had six children but Bertie's five siblings died prior to 1911. In 1911 the family, including a ten year old grandson Charles Campion, lived at 14 Drayton's Yard Arnold.
He enlisted at Hucknall into the Royal Horse and Field Artillery. His medal index card shows that he first entered a theatre of war on 14th July 1915 at Egypt He was later posted to Y/11th Trench Mortar Battery and served with them in Belgium providing close supporting fire to the infantry in the trenches. Bertie was seriously wounded in the Ypres Salient and died of wounds in the CCS at Mendinghem. He is buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery Grave Reference: I F 33
