William Burton was born in 1894 at Arnold and was the son of William a colliery banksman and Harriet Burton née Hackman of Spout Lane, Arnold. His father William was born in 1862 at Arnold, his mother Harriett Hackman was born in 1868 at Spondon, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Mary b1886, Elizabeth b1888, Isaac b1890, William b1894, Harriett b1894, Ellen b1899, George b1902, John b1903, Elsie b1906 and William b1910. In the 1911 census the family was living at Spout Lane Arnold and shown as William 49 yrs a colliery banksman, he is living with his children William 17 yrs a colliery banksman, Harriett 17 yrs a hosiery hand, Ellen 12 yrs a scholar, George 9 yrs, John 8 yrs Elsie 5 yrs and William 8 months of age.
William enlisted at Arnold into the Sherwood Foresters with number 34974 but was later transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. On the evening of the 15th June 1917, that the 10th Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment marched up to the trenches, and relieved the 7th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in support in the right sector of the Divisional front. Battalion HQ was at Leg Copse and Company’s were in trenches just South East of Oosttaverne Wood. The relief was completed at 11.30pm. During the period the relief was taking place there was intermittent shelling by the Germans and as a result one Other Rank (Pte Burton) was killed and four other were wounded when caught by the blast from a German shell.
He is buried in Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery Belgium Grave Reference: III B 4
