Joseph was born in 1873 in Middlesborough he was originally a blacksmith and was married to Agnes Broad (nee Hodgkins) at St Marys Church Wolverhampton, their children were Elsie Maud born 1900 and Frederick Musson born 1908. The family came to live at 30 Sherbrook Road, Daybrook and he worked at Wrights wagon works
It would appear that Joseph originally enlisted into the Cheshire Regiment in 1893 as Private 4420, and served with that regiment in the Boer War of 1899-1902, continuing in service until discharged in 1909. . Shortly after the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, he re-enlisted into the Army, this time into the Sherwood Foresters with number 20632. He was posted to the 14th Battalion and marked “For Home Service Only” (probably due to his age and fitness). In 1916 he was serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Regiment and was with “F” Company (at that time based near Sunderland). He was posted to the Regimental Depot at Derby on the 5th February 1916. Later in this year he was engaged on duties in Loughborough, Leicestershire, and was actually on duty when the town was bombed. He suffered shell shock and was discharged as being unfit for duty on 16th August 1918.
